Com Viet – London (our Vietnamese fix)
Few weeks ago, on a Sunday, we decided to head to Trafalgar Square for the annual Korean festival to try and get some good street food and whatnot. Unfortunately, as per the usual tradition for these kind of events, thousands of other people had our same idea with the result of making almost impossible getting any type of food without queuing forever.
As we were already in the center, we then decided to pay a second visit to our trusted Vietnamese restaurant: Com Viet in Covent Garden.
After sitting down on our table, we started looking at the familiar menu and went on with a couple of starters.
The first one was Grilled beef with betel leaf (£6.95): small parcels of minced beef wrapped in a betel leaf, basically a vine leaf. The dish came accompanied with a chili dip and vermicelli noodles. Since this was a newly added item on the menu we were quite curious to try it out and it was definitely a success!
As a second appetizer, we went for our old good friend: the Chili Salt & Pepper Frog legs (£7.95)!
Once again, the dish was very tasty, crispy on the outside without being too oily; sweet chili sauce was the dip of choice for this lovely dish and, quite frankly, the appetizer were gone from our table pretty soon.
We then moved on to the main dishes: my handsome husband went for the BBQ Pork Loin with Rice Vermicelli (£9.95) whilst I treated myself with a Stir Fried Squid Pickle Cabbage and Tomato (£8.95) and a portion of stir fried rice (£3.95).
The BBQ Pork is easily a winning choice: the dish is pretty generous and the pork has that lovely BBQ taste. Although not mentioned on the menu, few spring rolls are also present in the dish and the lovely combination of chili dip with rice vermicelli, completed what I think it’s a great main dish!
On the other hand, my portion of squid was not as generous as my dinner date, but it had lovely flavors: the sourness of the pickle cabbage matched the squid and the rice was a good addition to this dish.
Judging by the speed on my husband side, I can easily say that he would eat a double portion of that BBQ pork!
It is also important to note, that for the first time in a very long time, our only drinks order was… a bottle of sparkling water!
The service was very good for a “budget” restaurant, attentive and non intrusive.
We will definitely be back here to have a hot bowl of Pho (winter is coming…): see you soon Com Viet!
